Your LinkedIn profile is so much more than your online CV. You need to make sure that you display yourself in a friendly and professional manner whilst making sure that you stand out from the rest of your competitors. LinkedIn is not a one size fits all platform, there are many strategies that you can utilise. Which is best for you depends on the outcomes you are looking to achieve, and often the time you can spend implementing your chosen strategy. What you may not realise however is that the content on your LinkedIn profile is most likely the same or too similar to many others. Here are some of the most commonly used words or phrases on LinkedIn profiles, and if you have used any of the following, it may be time for a re-think.
1-Passionate
Passionate is an over used buzzword when it comes to LinkedIn, and even though it is a great word to use when describing your work ethic, it isn’t so great if 10,000 other profiles are using it in the exact same context. For this reason, try and avoid using it and if it is in your profile already, make sure that you replace it. Opt for words such as zealous, devoted, ardent and more. By simply staying away from buzz vocabulary, you can really make your profile stand out from your competition.
2-Track Record
People often use the word “track record” when describing success or historic achievements. This is another huge buzzword on LinkedIn and is used in thousands of profiles. If you have this word in your profile or your bio, take it out and add something a little different. Try words like accomplishments, achievements, or performance.
3- Expert
It doesn’t matter whether you are an expert in the industry or an expert in knowledge, the word expert has flooded LinkedIn profiles for years now and it won’t do much for your profile unless you are one of the top “experts” in your field on LinkedIn. Aim for words such as proficient, skilled, specialist, or even savvy. Your profile will shine right through your competition and others will pay more attention to what you have to say because it is not the norm.
4-Driven
Driven is another LinkedIn buzzword. Although buzzwords can be great for other marketing purposes, you certainly don’t want them on your LinkedIn profile. Buzzwords can make a range of profiles sound the same, so opt for something a little different. Think about ambitious, determined, or indomitable.
5- Extensive Experience
Experience is a word we cannot get away from on LinkedIn however the term, “extensive experience” is. Remember that you have a complete arsenal of words that you could use to deliver a more powerful effect, and this can really make an impact on your overall profile. Some better terms to use are comprehensive, wide-ranging or broad. Buzzwords can also leave your reader feeling bored, they are used so often that they are now “standard” instead of “descriptive”. Keep this in mind when writing your LinkedIn profile, and you’re sure to stand out a little more.
