This is a true story about how honouring a simple commitment can alter the course of your life forever. It’s also about LinkedIn.
If you’ve seen “Sliding Doors” you’ll know what I’m getting at. One of those moments where you face a choice to go one of two ways and each choice leads to a different life.
From about 2011 I started getting interested in social media. Like most of my friends I had a Facebook account. I didn’t check it very often but without realising it this was the first step on a fascinating and fulfilling business journey.
At the time I was working as a GM for ONEGroup, a great business that marketed high quality organic and sustainable skincare products. They’re brand is known as MIEssence and were early adopters of social media to get the message about sustainability to their market.
I was intrigued and dived into researching how this could help the business grow. The more I learned the more I could see that the potential of LinkedIn as a platform for serious business development was enormous.
So almost as a hobby I started a small consulting business, helping a few clients with their social media presence and campaigns. And I was steadily paying more attention to LinkedIn.
2013 was the year everything changed. LinkedIn was still relatively new in Australia. They opened their first office here in 2010, so getting an unsolicited invitation to connect was less common – and less annoying – than it is now. And that’s what happened.
Someone viewed my profile and invited me to connect. I checked his profile out in return and as he had an interesting background, I accepted.
We got to know each other via messaging over the next few weeks and then he invited me to attend a business dinner in Brisbane. That’s about an hour’s drive from where I live on Australia’s Gold Coast.
Here’s the honouring the commitment bit.
I’d had a long and tiring day and quite honestly just wanted to get home to Julie and the kids. But I’d said I would go, so at the crucial intersection I turned left instead of right and my life changed forever.
At the dinner that night I met Glen Carlson, founder of Key Person of Influence, now known as Dent. Meeting Glen, and joining the KPI program were game changers. I discovered a new passion for writing, experienced the thrill of publishing my first book and set out on a path that will continue for the rest of my life. I’ve gone on to publish several more books that play a key role in my business Prominence Global. Two other people I met during this time have been amongst the most significant influencers in my life. Dr David Dugan, mentor, friend and now business partner, and Paul Dunn, chairman of global giving movement B1G1.
Their guidance has stretched my thinking and opened my eyes to new ways that business can make the world better, impacting millions of lives.
Who’s influenced your career and life?
There’s much more to my story and hundreds of people asked me to include it in my book, Influencer, so I’ve done that. It’s available on Amazon if you’re interested.
