There’s so much more to LinkedIn than simply posting and interacting with other people. LinkedIn gives you the opportunity to create a digital presence that becomes a legacy. For me, that’s the real mark of being truly influential. As you focus on building your legacy, this – of course – benefits your business. More importantly, however, it enables you to leave a lasting imprint on your industry and the lives of others.
Define your purpose
Attempting to be influential just for the sake of some sort of fame seems completely ridiculous to me. When I think about the duckface selfie phenomenon, in particular, it makes me wonder what the thinking behind it all is. True influence is driven by purpose. A clear purpose is a mission that drives your actions and the content you share. A clear purpose will inform every decision you make on LinkedIn, helping you create content and connections that align with your goals. Go ahead and think about it for a while, and then try to summarise what your clear purpose is. Make it as short as possible – one sentence if you can. A clear purpose gives you a clear direction towards building your legacy.
Stay consistent
Once you’ve identified your purpose, the next step is to consistently provide value to your audience. Despite what the selfie takers may say, true influence isn’t about self-promotion. True influence is about offering your unique expertise and insights to help others succeed. Share practical tips, actionable strategies, and thought-provoking content that addresses the challenges and opportunities facing your industry. Consider the types of problems and challenges your ideal clients or connections face. Think more about the types of questions they ask themselves on a daily basis. Then, look towards creating content that answers their questions and resolves their problems. Each post, article, or comment you share is an opportunity for you to make a positive contribution towards the lives of those in your network.
Build your tribe
Influence isn’t a one man, or one woman, show. Influence is about building a community of like-minded individuals who support and amplify your message. That’s why you have to build your tribe, support your community, and engage with your audience in meaningful ways. This is, perhaps, the most time-consuming aspect of your LinkedIn life, but it is a priority that you have to take seriously. Give considered thought to how you interact with people, respond, and engage with them. The more authentically you interact and engage, the easier it is to build a tribe of wonderful people who support you and will further enrich your reputation.
Experiment with content
With your purpose firmly set, and your community in build mode, you can start to experiment with different types of content. Go wild and try every type of content tool that LinkedIn offers – they’re there for you to explore! Use LinkedIn Newsletters to share in-depth insights, LinkedIn Live to host engaging Q&A sessions, and post short videos to answer key questions. Experiment with different content formats to see what resonates best with your network. Don’t be afraid to get creative and try new things. The key is to consistently provide value and engage with your audience in a way that feels authentic to you.
Step into your role
One of the most rewarding aspects of becoming more influential is the opportunity to mentor and guide others. This is where your authenticity will shine. Share your experiences, both successes and failures, and offer guidance to those who are just starting out. Consider creating a mentorship programme or offering pro bono services to aspiring professionals. True influence has nothing to do with hoarding knowledge. Your purpose can only be fulfilled by sharing your wisdom and knowledge so you can empower other people.
