None of us can truly predict the future, but we can figure out some key trends for professional networking on LinkedIn. As we quickly zoom towards 2025, I thought it apt to consider 5 upcoming trends that I predict will affect your LinkedIn presence. Here are five trends I believe will shape the future of LinkedIn.
AI-powered personalisation
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is far more than a buzzword or a passing trend. As AI technologies embed themselves into our everyday lives, more and more, they’ll play an even bigger role in your LinkedIn life. In the coming years, we’re going to see AI play a much bigger role in personalising our LinkedIn experience. AI is already integrated into LinkedIn’s algorithms, tailoring your LinkedIn experience more and more. AI algorithms already analyse your profile, your interactions, and your browsing patterns to serve up the most relevant posts, job opportunities, and connections. That’s where personalisation is set to take a step further. This level of personalisation isn’t simply about making your feed more interesting. It’s about making your networking more effective. Powered by AI technologies, you’ll find it easier to identify the right people to connect with, and AI will help you by suggesting conversation starters based on shared interests. And yes, thanks to AI, you will be empowered to begin to predict which of your posts are likely to resonate with your network.
Virtual networking events
Yes, we all moved into Zoom rooms and Google Meets during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even though many of us have returned to the office, the demand for virtual networking events has not dissipated. On LinkedIn, I expect we’ll see a rise in virtual networking events, webinars, and conferences hosted directly on the platform. LinkedIn Events, a feature that allows users to create and join professional events, has seen a surge in popularity. Between March and June 2020 alone, LinkedIn saw a 1000% increase in virtual event creation. This trend is only going to grow as LinkedIn continues to improve its virtual event capabilities. That’s an exciting prospect, as it gives you more opportunities to connect with professionals from around the world, attend industry events without the travel costs, and host your own virtual gatherings to showcase your expertise. The future of networking is global, and LinkedIn makes it more accessible than ever.
Video content domination
Video content is already a popular content format on LinkedIn, and that popularity will only increase. LinkedIn Live, the platform’s live-streaming feature, has seen a 158% increase in streams since February 2020. It’s not just live video that’s on the rise. Short-form video content, similar to what we see on platforms like TikTok, is making its way to LinkedIn. It’s important to consider integrating video content into your LinkedIn content strategy. Now’s the perfect time to experiment with the format, try out short-form videos, and learn from your analytics and audience engagement. Give people a quick look into your behind-the-scenes setup, share quick tips, or host mini-interviews with peers and connections. Video content is powerful, and an important part of building your personal brand.
Skills-based networking
This is the trend that excites me the most. In our world of business leaders, entrepreneurs, and industry disruptors, I’m delighted to see how LinkedIn is evolving. LinkedIn has evolved towards placing an increasing emphasis on skills rather than just job titles or qualifications. This shift towards skills-based networking is set to reshape how we connect and find opportunities on the platform. This trend is set to continue, with LinkedIn’s skills assessments and endorsements playing a more significant role in how we present ourselves professionally. It’s time to focus on developing and showcasing your skills rather than your title or qualifications. My tip? Explore and take LinkedIn’s skills assessments to earn badges that verify your abilities. In the future, these skills could be what connects you to your next big opportunity.
More creator-focused features
LinkedIn is no longer the platform it was once. In the past, it was a rather bland place to post your resume and connect with colleagues. That’s no longer true by any measure. LinkedIn is a buzzing, vibrant content creation platform. We’re seeing a shift towards more creator-focused features, aimed at helping people build their personal brand and share their expertise. LinkedIn’s Creator Mode, introduced in March 2021, was just the beginning. Now,
LinkedIn is investing heavily in its creator community. LinkedIn has already launched a creator fund and is continuously rolling out new features to support content creators. Every single LinkedIn member has the opportunity to become more than a member. It’s time to think of yourself as a content creator on LinkedIn. The future of LinkedIn is all about valuable, engaging content, and you have the opportunity to be at the forefront of this trend.
There’s one thing, however, that will never go out of style, and that’s staying active, authentic, and valuable to your LinkedIn audience. Now that you know what the future holds for your time on LinkedIn, which trend do you want to explore?
