As children, we all loved stories. Nothing has changed, as we live our professional lives, and move forward in our careers. In a world where we’re inundated with information, a good story stands out. Here’s how I recommend you tell your story on LinkedIn.
Why you should share your story
Storytelling is a science that taps into the very humanity that lives within each person behind the profile on your LinkedIn feed. When you create and deliver stories that resonate with your audience, you capture their attention, cultivate engagement and build authentic relationships. When you share your story, you connect with the person behind the profile.
The power of storytelling
Storytelling is about connecting with your audience on a personal and emotional level. As human beings, we’re wired to respond to narratives. Narratives help us make sense of the world. When someone else tells a story, we’re listening to relate to it. When we’re telling our stories, we’re looking for other people to relate to our experiences. When you share a story, you invite your audience into your journey, enabling them to see things from your perspective. This emotional resonance leads to deeper connections, a more authentic online presence, and increased audience engagement.
Why telling your story matters on LinkedIn
There are three key elements to why telling your story matters on LinkedIn:
- Authenticity: Sharing your personal experiences cultivates authenticity. When you’re authentic, you’re reaching out to people in a human-to-human way. This is the most important way to approach your LinkedIn life because it’s how you build trust with your audience and your connections.
- Memorability: People are more likely to remember stories than facts or figures. When you tell a great story, it’ll stick in your audience’s mind, making it more effective, and giving your story longevity.
- Engagement: LinkedIn content that tells a story tends to receive more likes, comments, and shares compared with straightforward updates or promotional content. If you want people’s attention, tell a story rather than a list of statistics.
How to tell your story on LinkedIn
You may start to feel a bit of imposter syndrome as I challenge you to tell your story on LinkedIn. That’s okay because there is a step-by-step way to tell a great story on this platform.
You need to include these:
- Your hook: Start with a compelling opening that grabs people’s attention. This could be an intriguing question, a bold statement, or a surprising fact that piques curiosity.
- Your journey: Outline the main events of your story. This is where you describe the challenges you faced, the actions you took, and the lessons learned. You can use the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure this part effectively.
- Your humanity: Infuse your narrative with emotion. Whether it’s humour, empathy, or inspiration, use vivid language and sensory details to create a rich, relatable story that draws readers in. You can also use metaphors and analogies to simplify complex ideas and make them relatable.
- Your resolution: End your story with a clear takeaway or insight. What did you learn from this experience? How can it benefit your audience? This gives your story purpose and encourages readers to reflect on their own experiences.
Tell your story the best way on LinkedIn
To effectively craft relevant stories on LinkedIn, you must know your audience well. Consider their interests, pain points, and aspirations, and tailor your narratives to address these aspects directly. Use visual elements wisely to enhance your audience’s engagement. Incorporate images or videos that complement your narrative, as this helps to evoke emotions and makes your story more relatable. While depth is important in storytelling, brevity is equally important.
Your authenticity is everything
As you create your story, aim for clarity and conciseness. Once you’ve shared your story, encourage interaction by inviting your audience to engage with your story. Don’t forget: your authenticity is everything. Not every story has to be about your successes. Don’t hesitate to share failures or setbacks alongside your successes. Being transparent about challenges demonstrates vulnerability and relatability, and this helps you build deeper connections with your audience.
Every LinkedIn post is an opportunity to share a piece of yourself. Your journey, insights, and experiences all matter. Your story can help you create and build connections that go beyond networking, and speak to the person behind the profile, every day.
